How to configure UEFI boot in a BIOS that supports UEFI and Legacy boot modes?最先出现在Mini PC Tech Support Blog

]]>
Overview:

Industrial mini computers are widely used, and to ensure good compatibility, BIOS in Intel 10th generation and earlier product lines typically support two boot modes: UEFI and Legacy. Sometimes, it's necessary to configure UEFI-only boot mode in the BIOS, especially when installing a newer version of the operating system. Here's how to do it:

Note that when setting UEFI boot mode in the BIOS:

  1. After enabling UEFI boot mode, the corresponding partition type should be GPT partition.
  2. After setting UEFI boot mode, it's essential to use tools that support UEFI boot. Here's a guide on how to create UEFI bootable installation media (using Windows 11 as an example): How to Create Windows 11 Installation Media

UEFI Mode Boot Process: UEFI is used to automatically load the operating system from a pre-booted environment to save boot time.

UEFI Mode Boot Process:

  1. Upon turning on the computer, it undergoes a power-on self-test and loads UEFI firmware, which initializes the hardware required for startup.
  2. UEFI firmware locates the EFI partition boot file (efiMicrosoftbootbootmgfw.efi) boot manager.
  3. The boot manager reads the BCD file (efiMicrosoftBCD) from the EFI partition on the hard disk.
  4. Finally, it loads the bootstrapper winload.efi (Windowssystem32winload.efi) based on the configuration content for system loading.

UEFI boot is a newer motherboard boot option seen as a successor to BIOS. Its main feature is the graphical interface, which facilitates user-friendly graphical operations.

Setting UEFI Boot Mode:

  1. Connect a wired keyboard (recommended). Press the power button and then press Del to enter BIOS Setup. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to navigate to Advanced > CSM Configuration > Set Boot Option Filter to [UEFI Only]. After configuring, press F10 to save and exit.

2. Press F10 to save the settings, and the PC will restart. Press F11 on the keyboard to enter the Boot Menu. (Note: If a hard disk or USB flash drive is installed or inserted but not recognized in the Boot Menu, it may not have the UEFI boot option.)

3. If you need to set the UEFI Boot Option as the default first boot option, select Enter Setup in the Boot Menu to enter BIOS Setup. Navigate to Boot > Boot Option #1 using the arrow keys (e.g., UEFI: USB Storage Device or Windows Boot Manager Hard Disk). Press F10 to save and exit.

Q: What should I do if my computer enters BIOS directly after booting up and I can't enter the operating system desktop?

  1. (Applicable to M.2-SATA or 2.5-inch SATA protocol hard disk query) Upon entering BIOS, navigate to Advanced > IDE Configuration > Query Cezanne AHCI0 > Port1 to check if the hard disk name and capacity are recognized for the corresponding M.2 SATA hard disk. Similarly, check Query Cezanne AHCI1 > Port0 for recognition of the name and capacity of the HDD corresponding to a 2.5-inch SATA HDD.

2. If the hard drive name and capacity are not identified, suspect issues with the hard drive, motherboard, poor contact with the data cable, or damage to the hard drive itself. Power off the machine, disassemble it, and verify that the hard drive is correctly installed and the SATA data cable is securely connected at both ends. Power on the machine and check BIOS again for proper identification. If you suspect a faulty hard disk, try replacing it and checking BIOS again.

3. (Applicable to M.2 NVME hard disk query) Enter BIOS and navigate to Advanced > NVME Configuration to check if the hard disk name and capacity are recognized.

4. If the NVME SSD is not recognized, power off the machine, disassemble it, and replace the NVME SSD into the NVME1 slot. After replacement, connect the power adapter, press the power button to turn on the machine, and quickly hit the Del key on the keyboard to enter BIOS for further verification.

5. If the HDD is identified normally in BIOS but you still can't enter the system desktop after booting, suspect that the operating system is not installed on the HDD or the operating system itself is damaged. Try reinstalling the system to resolve the issue.

Why does the graphics card core display Intel on the 12th generation core graphics card model ® UHD?最先出现在Mini PC Tech Support Blog

]]>
Overview:

The Intel 12th generation CPU, including models like M1-i5-1240P, i7-1280P, and i7-1265U, are listed by Intel as eligible for "Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics." However, some customers have reported that upon receiving their computers, the operating system displays the graphics card model as "Intel(R) UHD Graphics."

Phenomenon Analysis:

When a computer lacks dual-channel memory configuration, the graphics card model typically shows as "Intel(R) UHD Graphics." This is a normal occurrence and does not impact functionality. To utilize "Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics," the following steps can be taken.

Solution:

(Prepare 1 memory stick of the same brand and capacity)

  1. Power off the computer and disassemble it.
  2. Install the additional memory stick into the SODIMM slot on the motherboard.
  3. Upon booting into the operating system under normal conditions, navigate to "Device Manager" and expand "Display adapters." The graphics card model should now appear as "Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics," as illustrated below:

Overview:

AMD Core Graphics Core Graphics cards boast several advantageous technologies that deliver ample graphics processing power, significantly enhancing performance compared to previous generations. These cards support technologies such as DX11, SM4.0, OpenGL2.0, and Full HD MPEG2/H.264/VC-1 format decoding.

The M1 and M6 AMD series models offer BIOS-based video memory capacity configuration to boost graphics card performance. It's recommended to set shared video memory to 2GB, as higher configurations may not yield significant enhancements due to limitations in the core graphics card's processing capacity. However, if the system's memory capacity exceeds 32GB, adjusting the video memory capacity might warrant testing for potential GPU performance improvements. The default shared video memory capacity for M6 series models is 2GB, which is sufficient for general use.

For M1-AMD series, video memory allocation is automatic, with a default capacity of 512MB in the operating system. Users can refer to this blog post for customized configuration based on their requirements.

Configuration Steps:

Step 1: Ensure a keyboard is connected, preferably wired, as Bluetooth keyboards may not access BIOS. Power on the computer and quickly press the Del key on the keyboard to enter BIOS Setup. Navigate to Advanced > AMD CBS > GFX Configuration > Configure IGPU Configuration to [UMA_SPECIFIED], then select UMA Frame buffer Size and set it to the desired capacity, such as [2GB].

Step 2: After configuring, press F10 to save and exit. The computer will automatically boot into the operating system. Use third-party software to verify the configured video memory size, which should now reflect the adjusted capacity.

Note: Adjusting video memory capacity will reduce available system memory; for example, with 32GB RAM, setting video memory to 2GB will leave only 29.9GB of operating memory available.
